Introducing the OXE Hybrid 450, the world’s first diesel-electric hybrid outboard.

Technology, available today, to transition demanding users into the future.

The OXE Hybrid 450 concept motor is the world’s first high-power diesel-electric outboard motor, based on OXE Marines’ leading patented diesel outboard technology and offers all the benefits of a fully electric propulsion system – full electric drive, increased fuel savings and additional range and power when needed.

The concept of this design allows the vessel to charge on the go! The vessels batteries charge directly from the 300hp diesel outboard while operational, guaranteeing availability of extra electric energy when and where you want it, no need to plug into shore power to charge up.

The OXE Hybrid 450 combines the best of two worlds and can be operated in three different modes:

  • Fully electric
  • Combustion engine only
  • Or a combination of both maximising the 450hp capability.

The combination of diesel technology and electric motor will ensure the OXE Hybrid will be one of the cleanest and most efficient outboard engines available. The electric motor also serves as an alternator and when operating on diesel, it can be used to charge the high-capacity lithium-ion on-board battery, providing additional power to both the electric motor and to various on-board electric equipment.

Two OXE 150hp Diesel Outboards supplied to Uist Asco

Proteum are pleased to announce that we are supplying two x OXE 150hp diesel outboards to Uist Asco, installed as single engine installations aboard Bulldog Boats HDPE hulls.

Based in the Outer Hebrides Uist Asco are a sustainable seaweed harvesting company. Knotted wrack seaweed (or Ascophyllum nodosum) has fortified crops, livestock and supporting the lives of people in North and South Uist for untold generations.

As recently as the 1980s, local Harvesters sold this cold-water seaweed to alginate companies at the port of Girvan, enriching the prosperity of the local economy from this natural resource, over the years their seaweed has travelled the globe, nourished the greens of European golf courses and feeding prized racing camels in the United Arab Emirates.

The two new boats are expected to be in operation by the start of May 2023. Uist Asco’s engineers will be undertaking training at Proteum’s facilities in Hamble during this month (April) to ensure they are self-reliant and able to service and maintain their engines ensuring maximum operational capacity.

Concept Hybrid 450 brought to you by OXE Marine

THE WORLD’S FIRST DIESEL ELECTRIC HYBRID OUTBOARD DESIGNED BY OXE MARINE

OXE Marine AB (publ) has developed a concept engine with hybrid drive that combines the diesel drive of OXE Marine’s outboards with electric drive and thus offers even lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

The OXE Hybrid 450 concept engine is the world’s first hybridised diesel outboard in the higher power classes and premiered at the boat show in Miami, February 2023.

The OXE Hybrid 450 concept engine is based on OXE Marine’s fuel-efficient diesel outboard OXE300. By equipping the existing rig with a 400-volt electric motor connected to a lithium-ion battery, additional opportunities for fuel savings are achieved along with the benefits that pure electric operation offers. In combination with HVO100 biodiesel, the OXE Hybrid 450 can contribute to greatly reduced carbon dioxide emissions compared to a traditional gasoline-fueled outboard. Thanks to the fact that the electric motor drives the power transmission directly, it can also be used as a generator to charge the battery during diesel operation.

“The OXE Hybrid 450 combines the best of both worlds, the energy efficiency of diesel operation with the electric motor’s steep torque curve and the possibility of a completely emission-free operation. Thanks to its flexibility, our concept engine provides reduced fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions, while also being able to deliver additional power when needed, for example during acceleration when the fossil engine’s consumption is extra high,” says Anders Berg, CEO of OXE Marine AB.

The battery capacity has been designed to be quiet and provides completely emission-free operation when visiting a port, fishing, or while traveling in waters where fossil-fueled boats are not allowed. At the same time, the well-measured capacity, and the ability to charge while underway mean that the battery can be used to power additional, energy-demanding equipment on board.

The OXE Hybrid 450 has a total power of 450 horsepower and is the world’s first hybrid diesel outboard in the higher power classes.
