Two OXE 150hp Diesel Outboards supplied to Uist Asco

Proteum are pleased to announce that we are supplying two x OXE 150hp diesel outboards to Uist Asco, installed as single engine installations aboard Bulldog Boats HDPE hulls.

Based in the Outer Hebrides Uist Asco are a sustainable seaweed harvesting company. Knotted wrack seaweed (or Ascophyllum nodosum) has fortified crops, livestock and supporting the lives of people in North and South Uist for untold generations.

As recently as the 1980s, local Harvesters sold this cold-water seaweed to alginate companies at the port of Girvan, enriching the prosperity of the local economy from this natural resource, over the years their seaweed has travelled the globe, nourished the greens of European golf courses and feeding prized racing camels in the United Arab Emirates.

The two new boats are expected to be in operation by the start of May 2023. Uist Asco’s engineers will be undertaking training at Proteum’s facilities in Hamble during this month (April) to ensure they are self-reliant and able to service and maintain their engines ensuring maximum operational capacity.

Concept Hybrid 450 brought to you by OXE Marine

THE WORLD’S FIRST DIESEL ELECTRIC HYBRID OUTBOARD DESIGNED BY OXE MARINE

OXE Marine AB (publ) has developed a concept engine with hybrid drive that combines the diesel drive of OXE Marine’s outboards with electric drive and thus offers even lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

The OXE Hybrid 450 concept engine is the world’s first hybridised diesel outboard in the higher power classes and premiered at the boat show in Miami, February 2023.

The OXE Hybrid 450 concept engine is based on OXE Marine’s fuel-efficient diesel outboard OXE300. By equipping the existing rig with a 400-volt electric motor connected to a lithium-ion battery, additional opportunities for fuel savings are achieved along with the benefits that pure electric operation offers. In combination with HVO100 biodiesel, the OXE Hybrid 450 can contribute to greatly reduced carbon dioxide emissions compared to a traditional gasoline-fueled outboard. Thanks to the fact that the electric motor drives the power transmission directly, it can also be used as a generator to charge the battery during diesel operation.

“The OXE Hybrid 450 combines the best of both worlds, the energy efficiency of diesel operation with the electric motor’s steep torque curve and the possibility of a completely emission-free operation. Thanks to its flexibility, our concept engine provides reduced fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions, while also being able to deliver additional power when needed, for example during acceleration when the fossil engine’s consumption is extra high,” says Anders Berg, CEO of OXE Marine AB.

The battery capacity has been designed to be quiet and provides completely emission-free operation when visiting a port, fishing, or while traveling in waters where fossil-fueled boats are not allowed. At the same time, the well-measured capacity, and the ability to charge while underway mean that the battery can be used to power additional, energy-demanding equipment on board.

The OXE Hybrid 450 has a total power of 450 horsepower and is the world’s first hybrid diesel outboard in the higher power classes.

ICCB commissions Ros Aine powered by OXE Diesel outboards

`Market First` in offshore vessel design

The 12m landing craft is powered by 2 x 200hp OXE Diesel outboards supplied by Proteum, the UK & Ireland distributor for the OXE range of engines, to serve ICCB’s expanding operational requirements in the growing offshore energy, transportation and aquaculture sectors.   “Ros Aine” can carry loads up to 4.9 tons, providing time management and fuel savings, while OXE’s high torque delivers sufficient power to manoeuvre under high loads and at low speeds.

The wide availability of diesel gives “Ros Aine” the versatility and extended range to operate in remote locations.  Diesels also have lower life cycle costs as they can be operated for longer than petrol equivalents between service intervals. If stricter emission goals need to be met all OXE engines can run on Hydrated Vegetable Oil (HVO), which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 94.2%.

Owner of ICCB, Eoin Grimes, commented “We have carried out the first contract charter with “Ros Aine” accumulating 125 hours.   The potential for the OXE in Ireland is huge within the commercial and aquaculture industry, we are happy to have adopted the OXE early on and are already seeing the benefits”.

Neil Taylor, Proteum’s Head of Sales, said, “Ros Aine” represents a major breakthrough for OXE into the offshore sector where it has significant advantages, especially in remote regions where it has been proving its value for some years serving inshore salmon farms”.

OXE is the world’s first high performance diesel outboard built for commercial users and is making significant market penetration worldwide due to the rugged, robust and reliable design.  They are available in 150hp, 175hp, 200hp and 300hp options.

Proteum will be present at the Irish Skipper Expo from 25th-26th March 2022, Stand 03.  The Proteum team will be joined by Eoin Grimes, ICCB, on 26th March; he is going to be available to talk through his journey commissioning “Ros Aine”.

OXE Diesel Outboards power new Thames workboat

Proteum has recently supplied three 150HP OXE Diesel outboard engines to power a new workboat for operations on the River Thames. The UK marine distributor has supplied the engines to Landing Craft UK (LCUK), safety and workboat specialists, who built the landing craft for GPSM DiveCo Ltd.

A diesel outboard was required on safety grounds as the landing craft will work alongside Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) jetties and also because the supply of petrol on the Thames is becoming increasingly limited. The OXE Diesel is the first approved high performance diesel outboard and was selected as the best in class.

Tony Kortens, MD of Landing Craft UK Ltd, said, “The OXE is faultless; the smoothness; power; and thrust of the engines are amazing. We can achieve speeds of 20 knots in a boat that weighs in excess of ten tonnes. The OXE’s excellent fuel economy shows with all three engines running to their maximum we have a fuel burn of 90 litres per hour which is phenomenal”.

Jeremy Paul, General Manager of Proteum, said, “Commercial operators have been wanting a high performance diesel outboard for a very long time to benefit from diesel’s lower maintenance and longer service life. OXE has solved this need, proved its reliability and is ready to go!”

In addition to workboats, the OXE diesel is suitable for coastal fishing, aquaculture, ferry operations, survey work, emergency services and other security and defence related operations.

Diesel has a higher working efficiency than petrol and OXE uses up to 40% less fuel than a modern 150HP 4-Stroke Outboard. The OXE also has an extended range, significantly increasing operational time between refuelling.
